Sencha is the most common type of Japanese tea and forms the basis of modern Japanese tea culture. Unlike shaded teas, which Gyokuro and Kabusecha Sencha is usually grown in full sun, which gives the tea a fresher and more lively character. This exclusive Sencha is made from the Asanoka cultivar – a rare, modern variety whose name translates beautifully as ”the scent of the morning”.

Asanoka is a cross between the classic Yabukita and a Chinese tea variety, resulting in a truly unique flavour profile. The tea is characterised by an elegant balance, where a fresh, floral aroma meets a deep, natural sweetness. In addition to lively notes of greenery, citrus and ripe fruit, Asanoka often carries a subtle, almost roasted richness reminiscent of chestnuts and sweet potatoes. Thanks to the traditional Japanese steaming process, it develops a pure, smooth and harmonious character with very little bitterness.

Sencha Asanoka demonstrates the vast range of variation found within green tea. Whilst some Japanese teas are dominated entirely by a strong umami flavour, Asanoka instead highlights aroma, freshness and a sophisticated sweetness. It is the perfect choice for anyone wishing to explore one of Japan’s new, exciting and more nuanced cultivars.

S Encha Asanoka is well suited to multiple infusions. The second infusion should ideally be kept brief, as the leaves have already begun to unfurl and release their aromas.
